Budgetary Process

Prior to October 15 of every year, the Town Manager and Finance Director submit a proposed operating budget to Town Council for the fiscal year commencing January 1. The operating budget includes proposed expenditures and the means of financing them. Public hearings are conducted at Town Hall to obtain citizen comments.

Prior to December 31, the budget is legally enacted through the passage of an ordinance. 

Sales Tax Reporting and Projections

Businesses should be collecting 9.9% on all goods sold in Mt. Crested Butte or sold online and delivered to a property in Mt. Crested Butte.
The breakdown for the 9.9% is as follows:

  • 2.9% - State of Colorado Tax
  • 1.0% - Gunnison County Tax
  • 1.0% - Special District - Rural Transporation Authority (RTA) 
  • 5.0% - Town of Mt. Crested Butte Tax


All short-term rentals and lodging properties should be collecting 16.8% on all guest stays in Mt. Crested Butte.
The breakdown for the 16.8% is as follows:

  • 2.9% - State of Colorado Tax
  • 1.0% - Gunnison County Tax
  • 1.0% - Special District - Rural Transporation Authority (RTA) Tax
  • 5.0% - Town of Mt. Crested Butte Tax
  • 2.9% - Town of Mt. Crested Butte Excise Tax
  • 4.0% - Gunnison County Local Marketing District Tax
